Matisse motivated mixed media fishbowls

We looked at Gold Fish painted by Henri Matisse in 1911. The students drew fish using craypas, and then watercolored fish bowls. They used tempera paint to make a patterned background to give the illusion of a room with depth. They also created a table using wallpaper. Finally, all the pieces were assembled and some students chose to add greenery, similar to Matisse’s composition. 

 

 

Kindergarten Create-a-Shapes

The Kindergarteners started with 2 rectangular papers and cut them diagonally. They glued their 4 new papers to create a shape of their own. They drew patterns and shapes with craypas on their shapes, then painted with watercolors. This is a great lesson about diagonal lines, patterns, cutting practice and watercolor. The results demonstrate how using the same basic supplies can result in unique creations. 

 

 

 

 

Gyotaku Fish Printing

The Fifth graders had the choice of printing with a real fish or rubber molded fish. They brushed ink onto the fish and printed onto muslin. Then they glued their fish onto a watercolored background.

 

Patricia Polacco visits! Quilt Art

The third graders painted a quilt in honor of the wonderful author and illustrator Patricia Polacco's visit to our school. The students divided a square and painted each section. Then they added patterns and stitch work with craypas. These were all mounted together and hung behind our special guest.

Bird on a Limb - 2nd grade

The 2^nd graders learned all about birds in the art room. Their unique characteristics include feathers, wings, beaks and talons. They drew their bird in colored pencil, drew a branch in oil pastel and painted a background in watercolor.  Some chose to add a nest and eggs to their compositions.

 

Recycled Cardboard Relief Sculptures ala Louise Nevelson

We looked at the art of artist Louise Nevelson. She assembled Abstract sculptures from found objects on the streets and in junkyards. These assemblages, created with recycled treasures, are inspired by her.

 

 

 

Scream Parodies

This year the 7th graders learned about the iconic painting The Scream by Edvard Munch. We looked at art parody and the kids were able to plan a theme for their own Screams. The students chose their preferred materials for the front figure and background which they created separately and then attached in the composition of The Scream.


























Other years the 7th graders have parodied Mona Lisa, American Gothic and Vermeer's Milkmaid.
