Picasso Blue & Rose Collages

The students observed and discussed the paintings of Picasso's Blue and Rose periods,
as well as his subsequent Cubist style. They first painted large sheets of paper in
different shades of blues/greys and pinks/reds. These were cut up into pieces and used
along with recycled newspaper, wallpaper, sheet music and construction paper to create
guitar, bottle, bowl and jug shapes. Some of these were also cut up and re-glued to a
different background to create a fragmented Cubist art piece.

City Printing - 3rd grade

The third graders examined the shapes and details of city buildings for a printmaking unit. They made drawings which they transferred onto pieces of foam to create a printing plate. From these plates, the students were able to print multiple images of their cityscape. While some students were printing, others were collaging paper cities, drawing borders for their prints and hand coloring some of their other prints. I also took photos of the students which they added to their collages for  a book of all their City Art.

Eric Carle Inspired Animal Book

In the art room we painted huge sheets of paper with lots of colors and used combs and rollers to add texture. Then for the next few weeks we collaged shapes from the painted paper to create animals. Finally we made a foam cover and added more pages on which we could color or write.

PRIMARY COLOR COLLAGES

These collages, made in Art Class, were inspired by the work of Dutch artist, Piet Mondrian. The first graders were asked to use only primary colors and black, vertical and horizontal lines, squares and rectangles in their compositions, as Mondrian did in his late work. We were able to review many concepts including use of perpendicular and parallel lines.
